Gender in Dystropolis
In a world where certain political leaders who will remain unnamed are indicating that their female staff must “dress like women” Thus starting the Hashtag #DressLikeAWoman online. I felt it relevant to release an old unfinished art collaborative project that I was involved in with Wendy of Dystropolis and Fay Crasto (MUA). The idea was to challenge gender expectations using Fashion and Photography.
Wendy’s theory was that in a world of gender equality fashion would be non gendered. Of course, in the world we live in today, Fashion is only one of the many aspects of our world that we heavily gender. From our jobs to the hobbies, everyone has experience in the limitations of our gender constructs. And if a member breaks these gender constructs, the consequences can range anywhere between pride to outright aggression.
The idea for this project was to present two visions of a similar situation and have the viewer ask themselves if they would feel any different between one image and the next.
We had a lot of fun on this project but at the end of the day the project failed to get off the ground for a number of reasons. I may go into them as a 5 things I learned kind of post at a later day. As of now I felt the photo were too much fun to let sit on my computer with out ever seeing the light of day.
If you find this project interesting please feel free to share or leave a comment down below letting me know what you think.
Series 01 : CEO and the Assistant
From Mad Men to Iron Man, the image of the powerful male CEO and their pretty female assistant is iconic in the north American ideal from. Would changing the fashion or the roles conflict with your expectations?
